Wild scene last night at the Fairmont Copley Hotel in Boston, where campaign staffers for Obama and Kerry watched the returns with supporters.
Union leaders, local pols and a phalanx of Blue Army foot soldiers crammed the main ballroom to celebrate. John Walsh, chair of the
state Democratic Party, told guests, "Tonight, we've proven that the people really are in charge!"
Attorney General Martha Coakley drew comparisons between JFK and the new president-elect, praising guests for their unwavering support of Obama during the campaign.
"You've answered that same call" of ask not what your country can do for you, Coakley told supporters, adding that the Illinois senator relied heavily on his grassroots network of canvassers and phone bank volunteers, many of whom were in attendance.
Loud cheers went up just after 8 p.m., when Brian Williams reported that Obama had won Pennsylvania, a key swing state. Local returns soon followed, including the news that Mass voters had rejected Question 1--the measure to kill the state income tax--by a margin of about 70 percent.
Assembled Dems--strong opponents of Question 1--raised their glasses high when that tally appeared on both jumbo-trons.
Alas, Prescott and I had to rush back to the COM editing lab before the party kicked into high gear. But we got a taste of the celebration to come--as well as a few hours dourves.
